Library Announces Spring Lineup of Speakers at Woodneath Library Center
Independence, MO – Mid-Continent Public Library continues to grow its roster of notable authors joining the ongoing Story Center Speaker Series at Woodneath Library Center (8900 NE Flintlock Road, Kansas City, Mo.). Starting in late February, the Library, in partnership with Rainy Day Books, will host numerous acclaimed writers who will each give free presentations to the public followed by a book sale and signing, including:
Thursday, February 23 at 7:00 p.m.
Author Alex George will talk about his new book, Setting Free the Kites, a powerful coming-of-age tale of love, loss, and hope, which tells the story of two teenagers and the summers that mark turning points in their lives. George, an Englishman who studied law at Oxford University, lives, works, and writes in Columbia, Mo.
Tuesday, March 7 at 6:30 p.m.
Author Sean Connolly will talk about his newest title, The Book of Wildly Spectacular Sports Science: 54 All-Star Experiments. In the book, Connolly demonstrates the scientific principles powering a wide variety of sports and activities. Connolly is also the author of The Book of Totally Irresponsible Science, The Book of Potentially Catastrophic Science, and The Book of Perfectly Perilous Math.

The author of nearly 50 children’s books, including the wildly popular Dinosaur Bob series, as well as best-loved titles such as The Mischievians, is visiting The Story Center. In addition to his writing acclaim, Joyce is an Emmy and Academy Award winner. He has contributed to films such as Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, and The Numberlys.

New York Times‐bestselling author Philip Kerr will talk about the writing process and his widely acclaimed Bernie Gunther series. Kerr’s latest novel in the series, Prussian Blue, is set for release in April 2017. Alternating between 1939 and 1956, the novel weaves together two of Gunther’s most treacherous cases into one tale of murder, intrigue, and suspense.

Andrew McCarthy, best known for his film roles in Pretty in Pink and St. Elmo’s Fire, will talk about his first novel Just Fly Away, the story of a teenage girl who experiences isolation after discovering a long-kept family secret. While this is McCarthy’s first work of fiction, he is best known for his travel writing as an editor-at-large at National Geographic Traveler magazine and the author of the bestselling travel memoir The Longest Way Home.
