Last Saturday, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office in cooperation with the Clay County Commissioners hosted “Project Identify Theft” in Liberty, Missouri. Citizens of Clay County were able to bring in any documents that should be shredded to protect their identity. An estimated 200 citizens brought in a total of 2,000 pounds of paper to the event.
Commissioners Jerry Nolte and Luann Ridgeway, along with Sheriff Paul Vescovo and Treasurer Ted Graves attended the event. These elected officials helped unload the boxes and distribute identity theft prevention information to the attendees. Additionally, Sheriff’s Deputies were on hand to answer citizen questions about the topic at the event.
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, a total of 12.2 million people experienced identity theft in 2012 across America.
